Are you the one in charge or are you the chaser?

The No. 1 Reason Why Self-Care is Essential

There’s a lot of talk about self-care, mindfulness and happiness. You can book yourself retreats, read books on how to become Zen and there are a billion courses out there fully dedicated to these topics. But what’s in it for you exactly? That's always the question right? What are you going to achieve once you’ve finished your book or end your course? Ofcourse, most often you’ll gain new insights but as soon as you open up your work laptop you’re smacked back into daily routine.

You see the thing is, we all know why it’s good to sleep enough. Why we should take breaks, eat healthy and exercise regulary. But with all the workload, we’re often the first to be taken off our to-do list. Who has time for bubble baths and 8-hour sleeps when there’s a deadline waiting, an overflowing inbox and kids who would like to have dinner? No, you’d better roll up your sleeves and work a bit harder! We all get stuck in this loop. And every once in a while, we get so fed up that we buy another book or burn some candles to calm down. But it never really works now does it?

The Importance of Self-Care: Top Tips for a Healthier Life

You're No.1

Even though we know why self-care matters, we often don’t understand why we matter. We take ourselves off our to-do list first because most often we feel we matter the least. But it doesn’t make sense at all, since we’re the ones driving the bus. So if you step off the bus, you’ll end up having to run after it. Can you picture yourself? That’s quite an uncomfortable spot to try and keep up and stay in control, eh? From there, even easy tasks will feel like mountains to climb. The workload will start to feel heavier and heavier and you'll always be chasing your own tail. Eventually, any steerless bus will crash, and you’ll be the one who has to pick up the pieces. You don’t want to go there.

So, if you ever hesitate to go the gym or take a break, imagine yourself running behind your own bus. Don’t ever end up there. You have to stay on top of your to-do list.
